Redesigning the Canvas app to root for the student.

These are the final results:

Canvas is, if anything, a hub for your classroom resources. How could I improve the design of this app without taking away from this core aspect, and changing it into something it’s not?

I thought about what other apps in our everyday life had the most similarity with Canvas. The answer was tracker apps. Whether it be training for a marathon or calorie counting, the way you organize your tasks has a large effect on how you complete them.

I designed multiple iterations of screens to see how I could mimic this effect.

How do I address user pain points while sticking close to the Canvas app’s primary intentions?

What if, using the data Canvas provided, I found a way to present it progressively?

Out of the insight provided, I formed three major topics. relationship with the canvas app, frustrations, and what they would like to see improved.

Following the integration of digital technology throughout our lives, we have seen especially seen an increased usage of it in the classroom setting. Most commonly, assignments apps to turn in your homework.

However, just because a platform is practical doesn’t mean it’s inviting. Throughout my academic career, I have lost count of the anecdotal stories involving turning Canvas notifications off, procrastinating on opening the app, or even refusing to download the app at all.

THE PROBLEM

The intimidation of the Canvas platform is preventing its user base from effectively taking advantage of the app

THE SOLUTION

I redesigned each of Canvas’s main screens to have friendlier and progress-encouraging UI

How can we make Canvas a more welcoming platform?

Canvas App Redesign

To fairly represent its user spectrum, I interviewed students age 13-22, who all currently use Canvas throughout three types of academic institutions.

OBJECTIVES FOR 1:1 INTERVIEWS

Understand how or if the way Canvas presents data has an effect on its users

Understand what motivations the app instills

Understand people’s relationships with Canvas

Find out what kinds of situations makes Canvas inconvenient

I interviewed a group of five students to learn about their personal experiences with the Canvas app.

After interviewing the users, I found that while functional, Canvas did not create much of a positive relationship, if any, relationship with its users.
